Behind the result - No mystery in the method
Selections retrieve fixed editorial descriptions of each generic category: its typical role, what it is not designed to establish, installation questions and cautions. The chosen concern adds context, not a numerical suitability score. No universal STC, Rw, NRC, IIC or decibel reduction is assigned to a generic material. If both project totals are entered, the tool displays their arithmetic difference in cents. Blank prices are not assumed to be zero. Totals are not normalised for area, scope, tax, installation or tested performance, and no winner is recommended.
This tool does not measure real decibels, fetch live prices or guarantee a specific noise reduction. Blank optional fields are omitted. Text is displayed literally, not interpreted as HTML.
Change inputs to explore another scenario. The old result is cleared when an input changes. Download text creates a local copy; Print / Save PDF uses your browser. Review notes before sharing and delete copies you no longer need.
Before you go
Which option has the highest soundproofing score?
The tool deliberately gives no universal score. A material is not a complete separating assembly, and different test ratings describe different properties. Ask for relevant, comparable evidence for the complete installed system.
Can NRC and STC be compared as the same thing?
No. Absorption and sound transmission are different properties, and impact-related tests are different again. The tool does not convert between ratings or subtract a laboratory rating from your room’s sound level.
Is the cheaper entered total recommended?
No. An arithmetic difference does not align scope, area, safety requirements or performance. Confirm what each offer covers and whether its evidence is relevant to your actual problem.
Are products, stock and prices checked?
No. The categories are generic guidance, not product listings or endorsements. No manufacturer feed, stock check, price search or credential verification takes place.
